Letitia Wright (born October 31, 1993, Georgetown, Guyana) is a Guyanese-British actress who gained fame for playing Shuri, the younger sister of T’Challa (Black Panther, played by Chadwick Boseman) in the Marvel Cinematic Universe film Black Panther (2018). Immediately popular, the movie introduced her to a large mainstream audience.

Early life and career

Wright was born in Georgetown, Guyana, and when she was seven years old, her family moved to London. She was inspired by Keke Palmer’s performance in Akeelah and the Bee (2006) to become an actor. As a teenager Wright attended the Identity School of Acting, a part-time drama school in London.

Her first acting roles were in 2011 with guest appearances on the British television series Holby City and Top Boy. She made her film debut in 2012 with the drama My Brother the Devil. Wright later described how at this time she began to struggle with depression and considered giving up her career. After attending a Bible study with a friend, she became committed to Christianity and returned to acting. Over the next few years she had parts in several British television miniseries, including Chasing Shadows (2014), Banana (2015), and Cucumber (2015). She starred as a troubled teenager in the film Urban Hymn (2015) and appeared in several episodes of the television series Humans (2016). In 2017 Wright’s performance in the episode “Black Museum” of the dystopian sci-fi anthology series Black Mirror earned her an Emmy Award nomination for outstanding supporting actress in a limited series or movie. The following year she had a small role in the action thriller The Commuter, starring Liam Neeson.

Breakout in Black Panther

Wright shot to stardom with her next movie, Black Panther. She played Shuri, a brilliant inventor who makes advanced weapons and gadgets to help defend the kingdom of Wakanda. The film was highly praised, and, with her costars, Wright shared a Screen Actors Guild Award for outstanding performance by a cast in a motion picture. Wright also portrayed Shuri in Avengers: Infinity War (2018), Avengers: Endgame (2019), and Black Panther: Wakanda Forever (2022). The last was filmed shortly after Boseman, the lead actor in Black Panther, had died of colon cancer, and the cast channeled their grief to portray the people of Wakanda coming to terms with the death of T’Challa. In addition, Wright appeared in the comedy-drama Guava Island (2019), with Rihanna and Donald Glover.

Small Axe, The Silent Twins, and more

In 2020 Wright starred as Altheia Jones-LeCointe, the leader of the British Black Panther Movement, in the first installment of Steve McQueen’s anthology film series Small Axe. That same year she disappointed many fans when she shared on Twitter a YouTube video of a controversial pastor questioning the COVID-19 vaccine and making transphobic remarks. Wright responded to the backlash by posting on Twitter: “my intention was not to hurt anyone, my ONLY intention of posting the video was it raised my concerns with what the vaccine contains and what we are putting in our bodies. Nothing else.” She soon deleted her account. In subsequent years Wright starred in the 2022 dramas The Silent Twins, about real-life sisters June and Jennifer Gibbons, who spoke only to each other, and Aisha, as a Nigerian refugee caught in Ireland’s immigration system, as well as the 2023 western Surrounded.
